Argentina Citizenship by Investment

Argentina announced its citizenship by investment program in Paris on October 2, 2026. The price is US$350,000 for one applicant, and applications open in Q4 2026. It is the first investor citizenship program in South America, and you do not need to live in Argentina to qualify.

What it is

Argentina now grants direct citizenship to vetted foreign investors. Economy Minister Luis Caputo and Cabinet Chief Diego Santilli announced the terms at the Argentine Embassy in Paris on October 2, 2026.

You pick 1 of 2 routes: A US$350,000 non-refundable contribution to the National Treasury, or US$800,000 in a zero-interest government bond created for the program. Your spouse and children can join your application for an added contribution each.

A new government body, the Agency for Citizenship by Investment Programs, reviews each file with Argentina's intelligence and financial-crime agencies. The National Directorate of Migration then approves or rejects it. This route skips the 2 years of residency that ordinary naturalization requires.

Who it’s for

  • You want a second citizenship in the Americas and you have no plan to relocate
  • You can commit US$350,000 as a contribution, or US$800,000 in a bond that returns your capital
  • You are married or have children under 26, and you want one application for everyone
  • You have business or family ties in Latin America
  • You want a Plan B outside the Caribbean programs, which the EU asked to phase out by 2028

Why it’s beneficial

Before this announcement, the investor's route to Argentine citizenship was a residency visa, then 2 years of living in the country before a federal court process. That takes 3-4 years in total. Citizenship by investment replaces the wait with a contribution and a background review.

You get citizenship of a G20 country and the right to settle across the Mercosur bloc. And you are in good company: Most early interest has come from high-net-worth Americans.

Benefits of Argentine citizenship by investment

The outcomes the program delivers for an American investor, beyond the headline price. Here are the 6 our clients ask about most.

  1. Historic buildings and the Cabildo tower on Plaza de Mayo in Buenos Aires, Argentina

The first citizenship by investment program in South America

No other South American country grants citizenship in exchange for an investment. Argentina is a G20 economy of about 46 million people. That puts this program in a different class from the Caribbean and Pacific options.

  2. Dancers at a tango milonga in Buenos Aires, Argentina, seen from above

    No residency period

Ordinary naturalization in Argentina takes 2 years of residency before you can apply. Citizenship by investment removes that requirement. Most applicants will never live in Argentina.

  3. El Ateneo Grand Splendid, a former theater turned bookstore in Buenos Aires, Argentina

The right to live across South America

Argentine citizens can apply for residency in Brazil, Uruguay, Chile, Paraguay, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru under the Mercosur Residence Agreement. One citizenship, 9 countries where you can live and work. Big difference from a Caribbean program.

  4. Vineyard rows leading to a winery beneath the Andes in Mendoza, Argentina

168 destinations with no visa in advance

Argentine citizens can enter 168 destinations with no visa in advance, the Schengen Area and the UK among them. Your US citizenship already covers most of those destinations. This one is your backup if that ever changes.

  5. Aerial view of apartment blocks across Buenos Aires, Argentina

    Citizenship without automatic tax residency

Law 27,802, passed in February 2026, says an investor citizen does not become an Argentine tax resident only because of the new citizenship. Argentine tax residency begins after 12 months of presence in the country. Income from Argentine sources is taxed in Argentina in every case, and our licensed tax partners review your position before you apply.

  6. Perito Moreno Glacier in Patagonia, Argentina

Dual citizenship for your spouse and children

Your spouse joins for US$100,000. Children under 18 cost US$25,000 each, and unmarried children aged 18-25 with no children of their own cost US$100,000 each. Argentina permits dual citizenship, so your US citizenship is not affected.

What Argentina citizenship by investment costs

The 2 routes into the program, and what each one costs for you and your family.

Most popular

Treasury contribution

US$350,000

You make a one-time, non-refundable contribution to Argentina's National Treasury. It is the lowest cash price for Argentine citizenship.

Government bond

US$800,000

You subscribe to a government bond created for this program. It pays 0% interest, and early reports put the term at 7 years. You get the US$800,000 back at maturity.

What it costs for you and your family

Early reports say the bond covers the main applicant only. Your spouse and children pay the Treasury contribution on both routes. These figures exclude government processing fees and professional fees. The government has not published its fee schedule.

  1. Step 1: Contact us

Tell us about your goals and your family. If you are weighing options across countries, you book a Freedom Consult. If you already know Argentina is your lane, we start on this route directly.

  2. Step 2: Build your file before the window opens

Argentina will check your identity, the origin of your funds, your net worth, your criminal record and your immigration history. Each payment must move through the formal banking system. We prepare that file with you now, so it is ready on the day applications open.

  3. Step 3: File through a certified agent

The government will certify the agents who can submit applications, and reports say the criteria arrive in about a month. We file your application through a certified agent in Argentina as soon as the list is public.

  4. Step 4: Vetting and decision

The agency reviews your file with the State Intelligence Secretariat, the Financial Information Unit and 2 ministries. It then sends a recommendation to the National Directorate of Migration, which approves or rejects your application. The government has not said at which stage you pay the contribution or subscribe to the bond.

Is Argentina's citizenship by investment program open?

The terms are public as of October 2, 2026, and the government opens applications in Q4 2026. Until then, the useful work is your source-of-funds file. Start it now and you are ready on opening day.

How much does Argentina citizenship by investment cost?

US$350,000 as a non-refundable Treasury contribution, or US$800,000 in a 0% government bond. Your spouse and each unmarried child aged 18-25 add US$100,000 apiece, and a child under 18 adds US$25,000. A couple pays US$450,000 in total on the contribution route.

What are the requirements for Argentina citizenship by investment?

You make the contribution or subscribe to the bond, and you pass a background review. Argentina checks your identity, the lawful origin of your funds, your net worth, your criminal record and your immigration history. Each payment must move through the formal banking system.

How long does Argentina citizenship by investment take?

The government has not published a processing time. If you read somewhere that approval takes 30 business days, that number is absent from the announced terms. We post the official figure here as soon as it exists.

Do I have to live in Argentina to get citizenship?

You need no residency period. The government has not said if you must appear in person for biometrics. Plan for 1 trip to Buenos Aires until that is confirmed.

Does Argentina tax citizens on worldwide income?

Law 27,802 says an investor citizen is not an Argentine tax resident only because of the new citizenship. Tax residency begins after 12 months of presence in Argentina, and Argentine-source income is taxed there regardless. Contact us and our licensed tax partners review your case.

Can my spouse and children get Argentine citizenship with me?

Yes for your spouse and your children under 26, provided the children aged 18-25 are unmarried and have no children. Parents and siblings are absent from the announced terms.

Does Argentina allow dual citizenship?

Yes. Argentina permits dual citizenship, and the US does too. You do not give up your US citizenship.

Is the legal basis for the program secure?

The program depends on Decree 366/2025. In June 2026, 2 federal appeals courts ruled against that decree in ordinary naturalization cases, and the government said it would appeal to the Supreme Court. The investment route was never before the judges. We confirm the status with Argentine counsel before any client files.

Should I choose the contribution or the bond?

The contribution is US$350,000 and it is non-refundable. The bond returns your US$800,000 with no interest, which comes to about US$224,000 of forgone yield over 7 years at 4%. We model both against your portfolio in the Consult.

Citizenship by investment or the Rentista visa?

If you can live in Argentina for 2 years, the Rentista visa gets you Argentine citizenship for a fraction of the cost. If you will never relocate, citizenship by investment is the route that works.

Can Americans get Argentine citizenship by investment?

The government has published no list of excluded nationalities. Its vetting includes a jurisdiction risk review for each applicant. Most early interest has come from American investors.

Is WW3 Coming? These 12 Countries Won't Draft You: Citizenship and Residency Without Conscription

As regional conflicts seemingly convert to global ones in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, Europe is mobilizing its draft-age population, and starting December 18, 2026, the US automatically registers young men for a potential draft. So which citizenships don't require conscription? And which can you get today versus naturalize into over time? This breakdown ranks 12 countries that won't draft your kids: 6 direct citizenships from $90,000 (St Kitts and Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda, Grenada, Nauru, Vanuatu, and Malta's citizenship by merit), 6 residencies that naturalize without a draft (Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Panama, Costa Rica, and Portugal), plus the fine print on popular programs that DO attach military service, from Turkey's buyout to Greek naturalization.

Flag Theory Explained: How Wealthy Americans Use Residencies and Citizenships to Reduce Country Risk

Almost everything you own answers to a single government: Your passport, your bank accounts, your business, your laws. You would never accept that much concentration in your investment portfolio, so why accept it here? This breakdown covers flag theory from Harry Schultz's original three flags to W.G. Hill's five, the difference between residency, tax residency, and citizenship, four residency programs compared (Mexico's economic solvency visa, Argentina's rentista, Portugal's golden visa, Greece's FIP), all five paths to a second citizenship, and why the Exclusive Citizenship Act is going nowhere.

EU Orders Caribbean Citizenship by Investment to Phase Out by 2028: Is a Caribbean Passport Worth It in 2026?

The European Commission has asked all five Caribbean citizenship by investment programs, Antigua & Barbuda, St Kitts & Nevis, Grenada, Dominica, and St Lucia, to phase out by June 1, 2028 or lose visa-free access to the Schengen Area. That ultimatum changes what a Caribbean passport is worth in 2026, especially for American investors buying it for the travel access. This breakdown covers what the EU demanded, the Vanuatu precedent that proves the threat is real, the two very different buyers of a second passport, and the three cheaper citizenship by investment programs worth pricing against the Caribbean, plus one outcome for these programs nobody has floated yet.
