The basics of the Digital Nomad Visa

What it is

The Digital Nomad Visa (V-category) is a two-year Colombian residency permit for non-Colombian citizens earning active foreign-source income through remote employment, contracting, or remote ownership of a foreign-incorporated business. You demonstrate monthly income at or above three times Colombia's minimum wage (about $1,200/month), apply through the Colombian consulate, and receive a Cédula de Extranjería within fifteen days of arrival. The V-visa is not directly convertible toward citizenship – to reach the ten-year naturalization clock, you'll typically convert to an M-visa (Investor or Pensionado) at renewal.

Who it’s for

  • Remote employees of US companies with documented salary and remote-work authorization
  • Independent contractors with twelve+ months of consistent foreign-source contract income
  • Founders running US LLCs or S-corps that pay them through salary or distributions
  • Clients who want a low-friction first step into Colombia before committing to citizenship
  • Tech, finance, consulting, and creative professionals already structurally remote

Why it’s beneficial

The Digital Nomad Visa is Colombia's fastest residency route – processing typically lands inside 60-90 days – and has the lightest documentation burden. It's the right entry point for clients who want to live in Colombia for one to two years before deciding whether to commit to the longer-term citizenship path. The US Eastern time-zone alignment means you keep your existing job or client base with no calendar disruption, and Colombian living costs let you stack savings against a US salary at a rate few other countries can match.

Key benefits

The outcomes the Digital Nomad Visa actually delivers, beyond the headline numbers. The six that matter most to our clients.

  1. Keep your US job or clients

The Digital Nomad Visa explicitly permits employment by or contracting for non-Colombian entities. Your W-2 from a US employer or your 1099s from US clients qualify, provided the work is performed remotely and the income is reliably documented over twelve months.

  2. Fastest Colombian residency route

Consular processing of complete Digital Nomad files typically runs 30-60 days. The Cédula appointment in Colombia happens within 15 days of arrival. End-to-end you can be in Colombia with a card in hand inside 90 days of submission.

  3. US Eastern time zone

Colombia sits on UTC−5 year-round, no daylight-saving. Your nine AM is New York's nine AM. Client calls, US business filings, and your existing work cadence stay intact – a structural advantage few non-US destinations offer.

  4. Family on the same application

Spouse or registered partner and dependent children up to age 25 (in education and unmarried) qualify on the principal application. The income threshold scales: spouse adds 50%, each child adds an additional minimum wage.

  5. Conversion path to M-visa

At renewal, you can convert to an M-visa (Investor or Pensionado) if you've established business, property, or qualifying income. The conversion preserves your accumulated time toward the ten-year citizenship clock – no reset.

  6. Stack savings against US income

Coastal Colombia runs 60-70% below US coastal-city benchmarks. A US W-2 income paid into a US account and spent in Colombian Pesos lets most remote workers stack savings at 2-3x the rate they would in any US city.

Active foreign-source income

$1,200/month

Demonstrate active-source foreign income at or above three times Colombia's minimum wage (currently $1,160/month for 2026, with a buffer we recommend). Eligible sources: salary from a foreign employer with documented remote-work authorization, contractor income from foreign clients on 1099s, founder distributions from a foreign-incorporated company you actively run. Family thresholds scale by size.

Choosing the right route is half the work. We model the comparison against your portfolio in the Consult.

How the process works

  1. Contact us

Reach out and tell us about your situation. From there, you’ll either book a 60-minute Freedom Consult (if you’re weighing options across countries) or get started on this route directly (if you already know it’s the right fit).

  2. Engagement and document gathering

We coordinate the document pack: FBI background check (apostilled), birth and marriage certificates, twelve months of bank statements, employment letter or contractor agreements, the remote-work authorization from your employer, US tax returns, and the Colombian-counsel power of attorney.

  3. Consular submission

Submit your visa application through the Colombian consulate covering your US state. Most consulates process complete Digital Nomad files in 30-60 days. You attend a single appointment for biometrics and document review.

  4. Arrival and Cédula appointment

You enter Colombia on the V-visa stamp. Within 15 days of arrival, you register at Migración Colombia and apply for your Cédula de Extranjería. The Cédula arrives within 5-10 business days.

  5. Establish Colombian presence

Open a Colombian bank account, set up local healthcare coverage, and lock in a Colombian address. Most clients spend their first six months in Medellín or Bogotá to figure out their long-term base before committing to a one-year lease.

  6. Decide and convert at year two

At year two, the V-visa expires. If you're staying, convert to an M-visa (Investor or Pensionado) and continue the ten-year citizenship clock. If you're leaving, the V-visa was a low-cost two-year Colombian residency with no further obligation.

The Digital Nomad Visa fits clients in the first year or two of relocation. The Investor Visa fits clients deploying capital with minimal day-count. The Pensionado fits retirees and pensioners. Most Digital Nomad clients who commit to staying convert to an M-visa at year two. We don't earn more if you pick one over another.

Why clients work with us

Three reasons families pick Freedom Files over the do-it-yourself path or a single-jurisdiction agent.

First-hand experience

The V-visa is the youngest Colombian residency and consulates are still calibrating. We know which evidence packages move and which get bounced.

Honest recommendations

About a third of Digital Nomad inquiries end with our recommendation against engagement. We tell you when the Investor Visa, Mexico, or Panama fits cleaner.

Pro counsel from the start

Every engagement runs with US-licensed counsel from the first call. Treaty positions and IRS-side mechanics are planned before you trigger Colombian tax residency.

What income qualifies for the Digital Nomad Visa?

Active-source foreign income: salary from a foreign employer (typically your US W-2 employer) with documented remote-work authorization, contractor income from foreign clients on 1099s, or founder distributions from a foreign-incorporated company you actively run. The consulate weights stability heavily – twelve months of consistent income from a single primary source carries more weight than a patchwork of gig income.

Does the Digital Nomad Visa lead directly to citizenship?

Not directly. The V-visa is a two-year visa, and Colombian naturalization requires ten years of legal residency. To reach the ten-year clock, most clients convert to an M-visa (Investor or Pensionado) at renewal. The time accumulated on the V-visa counts toward the ten-year clock when you convert – no reset. If you don't intend to convert, the V-visa is still a clean two-year Colombian residency.

Do I have to spend a minimum number of days in Colombia?

To maintain the visa, you cannot be outside Colombia for more than 180 consecutive days. If you intend to pursue citizenship (via M-visa conversion at year two), you need substantial Colombian presence accumulated by year ten – the consensus standard is 180+ days per year. Falling short can break the citizenship-clock continuity.

Can I work for a Colombian employer on the V-visa?

Not initially. The Digital Nomad Visa is built specifically for foreign-employer or foreign-client income. If your situation changes – say you accept a job with a Colombian company – you would need to convert to a work visa (M-5) or another category. We map the conversion process if it becomes relevant.

What about US taxes once I become a Colombian tax resident?

Once you cross 183 days in Colombia, you become a Colombian tax resident. You file in both countries: US worldwide-income filing continues for US citizens; Colombia taxes you on worldwide income at progressive resident rates topping at 39%. The US-Colombia treaty handles double-taxation through foreign-tax credits. US-licensed counsel maps your specific picture before residency is triggered.

What is the total cost beyond the income demonstration?

Plan on $1-2K in government and administrative fees (visa, Cédula, family-member fees), $3-5K in Colombian legal fees through our partner counsel, and $500-1,000 in translation and apostille costs. Total cash outlay for a clean single-applicant engagement typically lands in the $5-8K range, plus accommodation deposit and lease.

Can my family join me on the Digital Nomad Visa?

Yes, with one caveat. Spouse or registered partner and dependent children up to age 25 (in education and unmarried) qualify on the principal application. Dependent parents are NOT typically included on the V-visa (unlike the M-visas). The income threshold scales: +50% for spouse, +1 minimum wage per child.
