Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand lead the region in the 2026 Expat Almanac. Malaysia's MM2H residency-by-investment program is the most accessible pathway; Singapore is the region's premium option with the strongest infrastructure and healthcare scores; Thailand's LTR visa is a strong lifestyle route for retirees and remote-first Americans. Australia and New Zealand round out the top of the region.
Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) requires a fixed deposit in a Malaysian bank plus proof of monthly income. In its 2024 revised form, applicants deposit RM500,000 to RM1,000,000 depending on tier, unlockable in part for property purchase after the first year. The residency runs in five-year renewable increments, does not lead directly to citizenship, and offers zero Malaysian tax on foreign-source income regardless of residency length.
The region sits roughly twelve to sixteen hours ahead of US Eastern time. For a retired reader or someone managing a passive US portfolio, this is a non-issue.
